Newport kicked off attacking the Shide end on a pitch moistened by a shower of rain just before the kick off. Within the first minute, James Butt had fired in a shot that produced a good save from Joe McCormack. On 18 minutes, Charlie Smeeton drove a shot from 25 yards just over the bar. For West Wight, Alex Perry had a clear shot at goal but shot over from close range. A low cross from Sam Hart went across the face of the goal with Tom McInnes only inches away from sliding the ball into the open net. Unfortunately he collided with the post and required medical attention before continuing. A competitive half finished goalless. Newport made 5 changes at half time and a further 2 substitutions after 63 minutes. Keelan Sainsbury who came on at the interval was forced off with a leg injury after 75 minutes. Tom Scovell weaved through the defence but his shot from 20 yards was comfortably saved by Joe McCormack. West Wight’s best chance of the half fell to Tom Dye but his swirling shot passed just over the crossbar. A cross from the right by Charlie Smeeton was met by Matt Evans but his header passed inches wide of the post. There were few scoring opportunities in the second half as the match finished goalless.
