With both the first team and the Reserves away it was Newport A who took centre stage at St George’s Park on a glorious sunny afternoon.

Although East Cowes kicked off attacking the Allotment end it took Newport only 18 seconds to win a corner when a shot from Jody Wright was deflected. From the corner Shaun Dunn handled the ball and Newport were awarded a penalty inside a minute. Up stepped Jody Wright to fire a low shot into the net.

A minute later and Newport and Jody Wright had their second with another low shot.

The third goal came on six minutes when Alex Wright weaved through the defence before laying the ball into Danny Neal’s path to place it inside the near post.

East Cowes pulled a goal back on eight minutes from a corner when Ollie Smith headed in at the far post.

Newport’s fourth goal came on 15 minutes when Jody Wright slipped the ball through to Phil Read to run on to and guide it past Kyle Hewitt. Three minutes later, Newport had a fifth. A free kick from Alex Wright found Jody Wright. Kyle Hewitt was unable to stop his shot which rolled under his body into the net.

A 25 yard shot from Lyall Snow struck the underside of the bar and bounced down without crossing the goal line before being scrambled away.

The sixth goal on 29 minutes came from a free kick when Newport worked the ball through to Alex Wright who slotted the ball past the advancing Kyle Hewitt.

Lyall Snow

scored the seventh goal on 35 minutes when he evaded two defenders on the goalline before tapping in. It was only a minute before the eighth goal from Jody Wright from close range.

The ninth goal came after Jody Wright’s shot had hit a defender before rebounding back to him to shoot into the net from 15 yards. Newport reached double figures on 42 minutes when Phil Read shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Danny Neal fired in a shot from 20 yards that Kyle Hewitt did well to tip over the bar.

In stoppage time, Phil Read scored the eleventh with a low shot from an acute angle.

Within a minute Lyall Snow had outpaced the defence to slot in the thirteenth goal then Danny Neal scored the fourteenth from an acute angle. Shortly afterwards,Danny Neal tried a similar shot but this one just passed over the bar.

Both teams made substitutions. East Cowes replaced Ollie Smith with Josh Armiger and Newport brought on Aaron Shepherd in place of Chris Bond. Finally Sam Dudley came off to be replaced in defence by Lee Powell. Within a couple of minutes he had scored the fifteenth when a long range shot was deflected past the keeper.

Danny Neal

scored the sixteenth goal when he was allowed to walk through the defence before picking his spot. On 78 minutes, Lyall Snow scored the seventeenth with an unstoppable shot from outside the penalty area. Within a minute Newport had scored three more times through Jody Wright, Adam Jervis and Danny Neal.

On 81 minutes, Jody Wright’s curling shot became the twenty first goal as Newport were by now outpacing the East Cowes defence at will. Lyall Snow walked around two defenders before walking the ball into the net for the twenty second goal. In the final minute, Danny Neal scored the twenty third goal then Jody Wright headed the twenty fourth goal. Danny Neal scored the twenty fifth in stoppage time to complete his double ha trick and finally Wayne Matthews diverted a cross into his own net to complete the scoring. The final action saw Will Hunt join the attack but his shot went wide.

This is the highest score by an adult Newport team in any match and Jody Wright became the first Newport player to score nine in a match.
